Don't make them symlinks; just make them mount points. I always set up
separate filesystems for /var and /tmp.
The thing is that for simplicity I would like to only have one
separate partition (one reiser, one ext2).

Well, the monitor, certainly. Though I usually just turn it off if I'm
not expecting to need to work at the console for a while.
Sure, I'm doing the same. I was thinking more about sound, usb and
graphics cards. There must be ways to turn them off, at least in
laptops and macintoshes (desktop macs can go to sleep like laptops).
The network cards should stay up however.
