It has to be configured on your regular linux machine first before the virtual machine can access it. I run vmware on 2.4.4 kernel (UNSUPPORTED by vmware) without too many problems. It can't access my floppy correctly (but does do CDROM access from my Plextor SCSI burner, it doesn't like my Plextor UW SCSI CDROM though).
