I run Debian unstable with a self compiled kernel 2.4.20 Gnome 2.2, metacity latest nautilus and XFree etc...
Same here, but I have p3-733 w/512Mo This is a fresh upgrade to sid from a base-install (no dselect/tasksel) of Woody 3.0r1 (I tried copying an install of 3.0r1--with Gnome2 from Kov's sources--to this partition, and dist-upgrading, but things weren't quite right, so I started again with fresh).
I still don't know half I forgot I thought I should know ;-)
Since I upgraded to gnome 2.2 (I never used gnome 2.0 on that machine), my graphical environment became so slow I am about to start reinstalling from scratch my system if it doesn't get solved soon. Any operation related to widgets or workspace put my system down for 5-10 seconds! Unbelievable. I had no problem running Gnome 1.4 under kernel 2.4.18 and NVidia 1.2910.
The machine is a 1.2 Ghz laptop with 512 Mo.
E.g. of operation that put my system down:
- open the context menu in nautilus - switch workspace
- kill an application
[snip analysis beyond my ken]
Anybody with similar problems? Any idea where to look at to get more information? Could it be related to fonts?
I would check your theme--I got lag/delays/crashed apps with the pixmap gtk2 stuff, and decided to stick with the basic themes (Metabox1/2 are good and tidy). I still use SVG for the icons without any noticeable affect on performance--go figure.
I did notice some of what you described, yesterday, when I had Mozilla-mailnews open in one workspace, was re-compiling Mozilla 1.2.1-9 in another, had Sketch and Bluefish working in another, and Sodipodi in the fourth. Everything was a bit slow (especially editing in Bluefish), but all were quite usable.
One thing I do (when things turn strange) is to create a new user (say, `tester')--this way I can start X/Gnome with the defaults to try to narrow-down whatever happened (er, I messed-up). I just delete that user, and make a new one whenever I need it.
http://gnomesupport.org/ is a nicely-concise contact point--quite active.
Also, http://lists.debian.org/debian-gtk-gnome/ is good for heads-up.
Have fun! -- andyrew
