According to the docs, the card is very picky about which mode lines it will run. It would not work at all with the old modeline that I used with the Matrox card (till it died :( ). Here is the line that I am running: # name clock horizontal timing vertical timing flags #Modeline "1280x1024" 135 1280 1312 1456 1712 1024 1027 1030 1064 Modeline "1280x1024" 135 1280 1312 1416 1664 1024 1027 1030 1064 /usr/share/doc/xserver-svga/README.S3V.gz, where I stole the above line from, gives a few more that might work.
