Your bios definitely supports it, as otherwise you couldn't be able to boot Debain. You mentioned it's installed after tyhe 8GB point, so you should be safe.
A pretty good alternative I use (DOS/W98/OS2/Debian) is BootMagic from PowerQuest. With BootMagic you can (amoung other things) specify which partitions should be visible for the selected OS (neat!).
