xdm is not a window manager and i do not think your way is the right
one. in fact if you put fetchmail -d in .xsession the daemon will keep
on every ten minutes to try to fetch mail even though you are not
connected to your isp.  the correct way is to put a script
in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/ directory which would be activated as soon as you
start a connession to your isp (see another today's answer under the
same subject).
