Hi Kieren,

One thing I have done that works pretty well for me is to turn 'demand'
on in pppconfig. The pon command then allows the pppd call provider to
be waiting in the background for any app requesting information from
the outside. The connection to my isp is automatic when I issue a
command to check mail or find a url or whatever. I have also set the
idle time-out at 600 so after 10 minutes of idle time, the connection
is terminated, freeing up the phone line. This usually allows plenty
of time for browsing and such. The pppd call provider is then ready
for the next packet request. If I am reading a long page on the web
and pon times out, no problem: it reconnects automatically when I hit
the next link or back button or whatever.

I don't know that fetchmail will wait for the connection under these
circumstances as I don't use it, but every app I use, that is internet
related (kmail, konqueror, X Chat, netscape, gnapster, etc.), works
quite well with the demand dial.

I'm running potato under kde.
