Actually this is a FAQ, but yes, you can install different OS on different partitions or different harddisks. The install manuals should give you some hints how to do it. What kind of statistical software do you need? I don“t know about statistical soft, but generally there is a bunch of molecular biology soft available for Linux/Unix. Often the source code is available and you can compile it for your machine. Some packages e.g. clustalw, blast2, phylip are already included in Debian. I use my computer for molecular phylogeny. It is stable like a rock, running through for days constructing ML trees or doing bootstrap analyses under different optimality criteria, while other stuff can still be done in parallel.
