Some suggestions: Move /var/lib/dpkg/status to somewhere safe and copy each of the back-up files in turn to /var/lib/dpkg/status. Try dselect instead of apt-get Search deja and/or the Debian mail archives for /var/lib/dpkg/status. Brian.
