Thank you very much for that. But until I get apt-get working, I won't
  be able to do this. Apt-get always exits with error
    Unable to parse /var/lib/dpkg/status file (1)
          The packages list or status file could not be opened or parsed.

         The status file is physically present there, I aam root, still noway.
         Any suggestions? You know, no life without apt-get in Debian system.
         I posted this, but got only one reply.
