If the source is compatible with older libraries, you should be able
to build a deb with minimal effort. I have done this for several
programs, but it won't work where the source code is only compatible
with the new libraries. You will have to have the appropriate -dev
versions of any needed libraries installed. The newer apt-get supports
getting build dependencies, but I don't believe the potato version does
this.

Add the following to /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free

Then, run 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get -b source xchat'

It this completes successfully, install the resultant .deb with dpkg.
