$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/domainname (none) $ is where (none) comes from. > It looks like the dnsdomainname only uses getdomainname() if you ask > about NIS. Both glibc and the hostname source seem to agree on this. > > What am I missing, or is the documentation just bogus? In /usr/local/src/kernel-source-2.2.15/Documentation/proc.txt it says domainname and hostname These files can be controlled to set the NIS domainname and hostname of your box. For the classic darkstar.frop.org a simple: # echo "darkstar" > /proc/sys/kernel/hostname # echo "frop.org" > /proc/sys/kernel/domainname would suffice to set your hostname and NIS domainname. so it seems you need to tell it.
