What kind of mouse is it - PS2, PSAUX, Serial?  Or...what kind of a motherboard in your system - AT?  ATX?  Alternatively, what kind of computer.

We need a little more info.

I have an AT mother board that uses the serial mouse.  When I installed I had to go to mouse using the accelerator keys to get to the mouse page.  Think it was <alt>M, then I had to hit "n" to put the cursor into the edit field and then I typed "/dev/ttyS0" (that's a zero at the end).  I then hit "a" to apply the change and bingo the mouse worked.

You could have a similar kind of problem with a similar kind of fix.

Cheers,
-rick

Subject: My mouse wont work...No X

I have just installed Debian potato. I have my internet connection established. I can't seem to get X running. I keep getting a mouse error. Can't find the device. I have tried XF86Setup numerous times. I have a Logitech Mouseman mouse. I have not had a problem in RH/Mandrake/Caldera. I have been itching to try Debian but I need a GUI to get the rest of the household on the Linux path. Any help would be appreciated.
