If you are compiling a new kernel of the same version, you will have to
move the modules directory out of the way first. It will warn you about
this if the modules directory already exists. If you are installing a
new kernel with a different version (eg. you are installing 2.2.18 and
you had 2.2.17 installed) then you don't need to worry about it. It
will create the new directory.

It is easier to move a problem around (for example, by moving
the problem to a different part of the overall network
architecture) than it is to solve it. --RFC 1925
