I do not understand how compiling alsa from src prevents you from using grep. Suggest that you check the above mentioned file. > >I do not have /proc/sound and have alsa working fine... did you mean > >the directory /proc/asound? > > yes. /proc/asound > cat proc/asound/sndstat produces: > bash-2.04$ cat /proc/asound/sndstat > Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.5.10b emulation code) > Kernel: Linux sup3r 2.4.2 #16 Mon Apr 2 09:38:01 UTC 2001 i586 > Config options: 0 > > Installed drivers: > Type 10: ALSA emulation > > Card config: > Sound Blaster 16 at 0x220, irq 10, dma 1&5 > > Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG > > Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG > > Midi devices: > 1: MPU-401 (UART) > > Timers: > 7: system timer > > Mixers: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG > > it says not enabled in config but I am unsure of how to enable > it...faq,install or rtfm'ng doesn't give any info on that...maybe that is > where my problems lie? This says, that you have a sb16 module loaded. How did you compile alsa? I modified /etc/alsa/alsa-source.conf and ensured that my card was set, `grep -i card /etc/alsa/alsa-source.conf`: ALSA_CARDS=ens1370 Then `make-kpkg modules_image` at which point you should see that it picks up the right card. > >I also had to add these two lines to /etc/devfs/perms to fix > >permission problems with devfs: > > > >REGISTER sound/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 660 > >REGISTER snd/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 660 > > I do not have the directory /devfs/perms under /etc...do I just create that > manually and add those entries? Which means that you are probably not using devfs, so just ignore this then. /Allan -- Allan M. Wind email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] P.O.
