on my console, i still get screwy 8th-bit graphic characters (mutt's hierarchical indications for threading are screwy, and dialog/whiptail borders are just as goofy). immediately after running SVGATextMode all is well, but eventually a screen refresh or what-have-you makes the system mis-choose its alternate/graphics character set...
