It could be bad memory. I can't say that I've ever had memory die while in use (i.e. in a system that had been fine for a long time, hadn't been rebooted, etc). I recently had something similar happen, though, and it turned out to be a frozen CPU fan. The system overheated during its nightly cron work and died.
