He shouldn't reinstall libc-i686. From the changelog of glibc-2.2.2-3 currently waiting in incoming [1]: * Disable building of optimized libs for now. I did not forsee the problems involved with symbol skew between ld-linux.so.2 and the optmized libc.so.6.
