Thanks to an off-list response from Hendrik, in Germany, i have now got my
mouse cursor back. Thanks to him and to all who responded. It turns out that
my video ram was incorrectly specified, and that was the culprit. Now I have
more questions:

  1. I need to compile a kernel with vfat, ppp, and some other support. The
kernel packages were not installed (/usr/src is empty) Coming from the RPM
world, I think I have figured out how to install software using apt-get, but
what are the 2.2.18 kernel packages actually called? I don't think I can
apt-get <packagename> without knowing what <packagename> actually is.

   2. Anybody know what window managers and xterms come on the 2.2r2 iso? I
really want to install enlightenment for use w/ gnome, and eterm. Plus I want
the background images that come with e-term.

   3. I am a bit spoiled when it comes to system admin, coming from Mandrake.
Mind you, I'm not complaining, the lack of eye-candy admin was one of the
(many) reasons why I decided to give debian a try. Still, a list of which file
(or directory) in /etc does what would be useful. There's got to be a how-to
or web site or something.

   4. More generally, a description of the differences between debian and
red-hat based distros would be helpful.

Thanks a lot...
