Hi You can try the kernel-based solution which is to compiled kernel 2.4 with pppoe support and used the patch pppd (website should be in the kernel-help). But I guess other ppl have got the pppoe package + kernel 2.4 working fine. for me I used the kernel-based solution + iptable + masquerading with no problem.
