Sawfish by default, will just have the standard X background. If you middle mouse click or right click (I forget which) you should get a menu up.
The other option is to edit your .xinitrc exec gnome-session that will start up gnome+sawfish. Or you can just keep it as sawfish and configure it with like I said the middle mouse button or right mouse button.
