Maybe my net troubles were related to the kernel compile.

I booted with the Linux install disk, opened up a shell, and manually
mounted my Linux root filesystem. I then created a directory called
"old" and moved everything into it. There were no other files or
directories starting with 'o' so it was easy:

# mv /mnt/[a-np-z]* /mnt/old/.

Then I proceeded to do a full install, using the unofficial Woody CDs.
Once the system was up, I was able to manually move back the user
directories in /home, and any other stuff I wanted to keep.

Once the system was working correctly, I built a new kernel. With the
new kernel, the mouse is still dead, but my network is alive again!

Interestingly, that trivial "route" command is still broken the exact
same way, but "ping 127.0.0.1" works now where it didn't before. I'm
wondering why the trivial route command is broken.

I have been looking at the usb-howto file and I will follow its advice
on how to get the mouse working again.

I still wonder how to get *all* the boot messages with dmesg.
