You can use any number of connection methods. Since I am on an internal network, I use rexec and rsh. You don't need a .rhosts for rexec but your password gets sent in the clear. You used to have to set up /etc/hosts.allow for in.rexecd. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore (just checked and mine are the default?). You probably have to have your w95 box in dns or in the /etc/hosts file.
If you are on a network that is exposed to the internet, you really need to look into ssh. You'll need a client on the w95 box. I haven't tried to do this with exceed.
