/proc/devices lists '188 usb/ttys/%d', choking MAKEDEV

I am running Debian 2.2 (potato) with the exception of having compiled 
the 2.4.1 kernel.

MAKEDEV chokes, with the output:
/sbin/MAKEDEV: major_usbtts%d=188: command not found
I believe the problem is with line 150 of the script, and due to the 
fact that in /proc/devices, under Character Devices, is the line:
188 usb/tts/%d

Can anyone help?
