Only recently has it stopped working. I did a fresh install of Debian/KDE and then the GNOME programs, but they don't take on KDE2's colors like they used to.

It's not like KDE/GNOME have any special permissions that don't allow each other to read each other's config files. This is why they're all getting closer to WM/UI standards, so that it's easier (and better for the consumer) for KDE and GNOME programs to cooperate together. This is a *good* thing. I *want* GNOME programs to take on my KDE2 preferences (which is why I have "Apply KDE fonts and colors to non-KDE programs" enabled) so that I don't have to try to set everything up twice. - Bart
