Mailing list or newsgroup

As a new subscriber of this mailing list I've noticed that the newsgroup 
linux.debian.user replicates the same messages of this mailing. I wonder if 
it's possible to subscribe to the newsgroup only and partecipate at the list 
actively (in order to avoid my mail box from being flooded with 150-200 
messages per day)  OR
it's compulsory to subscribe this mailing list.
