Yeah probably. I tried to `modprobe` into a kernel, that has the driver
compiled-in (but won't recognize the NIC anyway), but the error message
is the same when I try to `modprobe` the driver into kernel that _does
not_ have the driver compiled-in.
I searched google and found that some 2.4.0test kernels needed a patch
for this card, but nothing about 2.4.0prerelease or 2.4.0final.

Nope. `ifconfig eth0` complains about an unknown interface. This comes
from a kernel that has 3c509 support compiled as a module:
