'reset' will cure this. That's the command 'reset', not reset the system :} > 2) X crashes (hasn't for a while actually) and dumps you in a grey > screen with a mouse pointer and nothing else. (That would be running control-alt-backspace will boot you out of X and back to console. If you have xdm it will restart, otherwise you go back to whatever console you started X from.
