You have to run it as the user in control of the X session, not as the user trying to gain access. Run "xhost +localhost" as the user running X. Incedentally, take a look at kernel-package (install fakeroot with it), and the readme under /usr/share/doc/kernel-package. You don't have to be root to configure and compile the kernel, only to install it. You do have to have permissions to read/write the directory structure for the kernel, but that's easy enough to do. -- Did you know that if you play a Windows 2000 cd backwards, you will hear the voice of Satan?
