I suggest you look at AbiWord. It is small and fast, and it would be my first choice on a 486. http://www.abiword.com/ Do you have a really fast Linux (or other UNIX) computer on the network somewhere? If so, you could just use the 486 as an X "thin client" and let the fast computer actually run StarOffice. All you would really run on the 486 is the X server. If you need features that AbiWord doesn't have, you might want to try this.
