well, > | export TERM=dtterm gives me an almost functioning terminal. just have > | to fix up sun's annoying delete, home/end & pgup/dn key problems. i should have been more specific, the export TERM is done before ssh, so $TERM when ssh'd to solaris is TERM=dtterm. the problem is more to do with key bindings etc. i just realised there is a Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO.txt.gz, so this may answer my question. thanks, mark.
