I am trying to compile the newly released kernel 2.4.0 on my laptop. (I also have ReiserFS support patched in). When I try compiling it using make-kpkg, I consistently get it dying the same place, with the messages:

It is a Debian 2.1 system. I would upgrade it to 2.2 but that is rather difficult just at the moment. gcc is version 1:2.95.2-13.
