In a stats colum in linux format this month, it said: 64,000 is the maximum number of users that could connect to a linux box before kernel version 2.4
With a 2.4 kernel, you can have 4.3bn connections. I'd image that the structures to handle this number of user ids must be implace otherwise this stat would be somewhat useless (if you believe stats anyway!)
