hi all
I've been trying to get my new Acer CD-RW drive working with no luck so far
(after 4-5 weeks - on and off).
I first tried under Win98 SE and Win2000 (including updating firmware,
motherboard drivers & ASPI layer
etc.) - but Windows would sometimes not detect the drive at all, or hang when
running Explorer or hang
when starting a burn.
I'm now trying to get it working under Linux (which if it doesn't work I'm
taking it back to the shop). I've
followed all the steps from the CD-Writing-HOWTO, but I'm getting similar
problems to those under Windows
(ie. using cdrecord through Xcdroast or gcombust hangs the system for 10-15
secs and then aborts
with an "Illegal address", "check condition" or another error.

I've configured most of the drivers as modules, as compiling them into the
kernel didn't work either.
If anyone can see where I'm going wrong I'd appreciate it ... otherwise I'm
going to put it down as
either a motherboard or CD-RW hardware error ... and the CD-RW is easier to
replace!
