hi all I've been trying to get my new Acer CD-RW drive working with no luck so far (after 4-5 weeks - on and off). I first tried under Win98 SE and Win2000 (including updating firmware, motherboard drivers & ASPI layer etc.) - but Windows would sometimes not detect the drive at all, or hang when running Explorer or hang when starting a burn.
I'm now trying to get it working under Linux (which if it doesn't work I'm taking it back to the shop). I've followed all the steps from the CD-Writing-HOWTO, but I'm getting similar problems to those under Windows (ie. using cdrecord through Xcdroast or gcombust hangs the system for 10-15 secs and then aborts with an "Illegal address", "check condition" or another error. Here's the output from 'dmesg' - which to me looks a-ok: start---------------------------------------- Linux version 2.2.17 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 2.95.2 20000220 (Debian GNU/Linux)) #1 SMP Mon Jan 8 12:45:23 WST 2001 mapped APIC to ffffe000 (0028c000) Detected 451028 kHz processor. ide_setup: hdc=ide-scsi Console: colour VGA+ 80x25 Calibrating delay loop... 897.84 BogoMIPS Memory: 184496k/188352k available (940k kernel code, 424k reserved, 2440k data, 52k init) Dentry hash table entries: 32768 (order 6, 256k) Buffer cache hash table entries: 262144 (order 8, 1024k) Page cache hash table entries: 65536 (order 6, 256k) CPU: L1 I Cache: 32K L1 D Cache: 32K Checking 386/387 coupling... If anyone can see where I'm going wrong I'd appreciate it ... otherwise I'm going to put it down as either a motherboard or CD-RW hardware error ... and the CD-RW is easier to replace! thanks Andrew ------------------------------ Andrew McRobert B.Sc.(Comp.
