No need. Switch to a virtual console (<ctrl><alt>-F[1-6]), log in, if
necessary, and run:
$ startx -- :1 2>&1 | tee startx.log
...if you get permission errors, do it as root (there's a known issue
with the X wrappers config). Post this to list.
