However your problem may be that you have selected a very large number of packages and none of them will be installed until they are all downloaded. That would mean that you (as you say above) have lots of deps, but it would also mean that none of them are installed. I'd put all the packages that you don't need immediately on hold ( = ) and then start downloading and installing a few at at time. Starting with the most important ones.
