It's the file /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config that you need to modify. It's the first line that needs changed. At the moment your's will most likely read: allowed_users=rootonly nice_value=-10 Change the first line to read: allowed_users=console And all should be well. Well, that's what worked here, at any rate.
