Hi, I have a little firewall server with no printer and I removed lpd, until now without difficulties.
However, there still hangs around a lot of stuff in /etc/init.d /etc/rcS.d /etc/rcX.d /etc/cron.weekly and so forths. You have to remove that by hand as far as I know, but your system will keep on running. I do not know about reinstalling, but I guess everything works fine after a apt-get install lpd (and printfilters if needed).
