I had the problem of LILO stopping at "LI" when booting from the MBR on my machine. Upon further research I found that my BIOS is too cheap to boot from /dev/hdc. (Using LILO to boot from floppy worked, but couldn't find /dev/hda). My solution is to use loadlin.exe (from AUTOEXEC.BAT).
