I seem to get exactly what you want - the jpg in the upper left corner on a black background. I tried both of the lines below in my post.hook file and they both worked the same. Exec xsetbg -at 0,0 -border black <path to jpg> Exec xli -onroot -quiet -at 0,0 -border black <path to jpg> I'm afraid I don't have a clue why yours is tiling - sorry.
