Well, it appears that I didn't need XKB stuff after all -- I just used xmodmap like I always had before, although for some reason or another I didn't already have the "kbd" package installed here. After I got that everything worked just fine.
I suspect that using XKB is the more "current" way of doing things, but it seems to be obfuscated past the point of usability, so I'm glad that good old xmodmap works. Thanks! - Ryan King
