Thanks. This would explain my observations and is far more specific a reason than the one I proposed. A quick check with a netscape setting in .Xresources shows that the -dpi setting is honoured for the menu fonts when I put Netscape*fontList:-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-*-140-0-0-*-*-iso8859-* However, I had to have 0 for xres and yres rather than a * for this to work.
