it is possible, you put the old config somewhere (I forgot this part:-) and then you execute make oldconfig (IIRC),
sorry, I dodn't remember it exactly but I bet you can find it in some
docs (probably the ones that come with kernel, or check howtos at
linuxdoc.org)
