I'm almost positive it's your environment, terminal setting, or termcap. Since you *can* edit stuff in mutt, and possibly elsewhere (does vi work?), you're going to have to create shell scripts and run these to diagnose and fix your problem. Remember that since you're dealing with shell environment settings, you're going to want to *source* the files, not execute them.
