Sounds as if your vnc session isn't starting a window manager.  This is
an exact analog to having the same experience on a normal X session.

Check your startup scripts -- I believe that's /etc/vnc<something> or
~/.vncrc, and see what windowmanager it's trying to start.

You may need to launch a 'startkde' command from another shell to start
the desktop.
