Hmm. Does vfat even support symlinks? That may be the problem. If you don't need the partition, you should try reformatting to ext2fs. (Or maybe, is there a tool out there that will convert the partition?) Well, what it's trying to do is symlink kernel-source-2.2.17/include/asm to kernel-source-2.2.17/include/asm-i386. I think it needs that to be a symlink, and I don't think you can just copy the directory (although it probably wouldn't hurt to try).
