I was running 2.0.5a on a slink box with kernel 2.0.36 and upgraded to potato. Had similar problems. Something in the deep dark recesses of my mind (probably saw a posting on this list in the past) told me to upgrade to kernel 2.2.17 before I started trying to truly diagnose the problem. Worked peachy. YMMV, of course.
