Well, my woody box began to swap like crazy, and response to keyboard
and mouse was too slow, but I still managed to issue a kill
command. Some *minutes* later, the box was ok again.

I don't know what killed the process - could be the kill command, or
it could be the kernel (because it ws running out of swap space: I
have 256 Mb available swap space, and 220 were being used!) The shell
from which I had called yes was also killed.

What kernel are you using? How much RAM?

I'm using 2.4.0-test10-pre5, with 64 Mb RAM and 256 swap.
