The past few days I have been experiencing some hard lock-ups on my
computer and I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what was going
on. Basically the screen freezes and the caps lock and scroll lock
lights blink about once a second. The box will not respond to anything
including network traffic. I am using kernel 2.4.21-pre3-ac5, but it
also happens under 2.4.20 and a few others. All I have in my logs is
this.

I ran memtest86 on it and it came out clean through 9 passes. Im pretty
much stumped on why it is doing this. Does anyone have a clue. Btw I
am running unstable.
Thanks

If it happens fairly often (every 20 mins or so) you might try running Knoppix for a couple of hours to see if the lockups occur there also. If so, you know it's not in your particular software setup (i.e., it's a hardware problem).

I experienced similar lockups on a Gateway computer a few weeks ago with an eepro100 built-in NIC; turned out to be a bug in the NIC. I googled for the symptoms and found a couple of hits which pointed me this way. Turning off some "feature" (I don't remember which) in the NIC's PROM using a utility in the nictools-pci package fixed it, but I'm pretty sure my problem didn't generate any error logs concerning the cdrom (which may or may not be relevent in your case).
