There's a utility called script made for just this purpose. Package name is
(appropriately enough) script.

There's a screengrabber panel applet called something like screenshooter.
It's in the package gnome-applets, which on my system came from the
HelixCode folks. I'm not sure if it's in the non-Helix version.
